SMALL SPACE DWELLER HANDBOOK:
Consider Freshening Up Your Space With Upholstery

{These gorgeous chairs got a fresh facelift with yummy Thomas Paul fabric}

When I bought these vintage chairs, I knew that I would be upholstering them one day. The frame of the chairs are so pretty but the dull green fabric needs an overhaul. I am working on freshening these chairs and think upholstery is a fabulous and practical way to update your space without adding more pieces to the mix. Small space footprints are small so update your existing pieces. Price out different vendors and see what kind of deals you can get - it's worth it! More to come on my own DIY project...

SMALL SPACE DWELLER HANDBOOK:
Different Styles Pulled Together By Color and Texture

One of my fave designers, Jonathan Adler, has done some fabulous design makeovers for clients. I love this one in particular that showcases how different styles can really work together when color and texture are involved. The chairs come from different genres and are styled with different colors yet when place against the backdrop of the wall gallery and over the same rug pattern, all of the colors create a harmony and the space feels super balanced and super visual.

This is a great thought to hang on to when living in small spaces. Try to create balance and symmetry but watch out for too matchy-matchy or your space may come off like a hotel room. Create a vibe in your home and use color to pull it all together. Design styles really can work together when color and texture are involved. Oh and have fun! It's your home so enjoy!

SMALL SPACE DWELLER HANDBOOK:
Using BLACK In A Small Space

Most of us out there do tend to shy away from black as wall color choice. Keep in mind that it could provide a wonderful impact in a small space when used in the right balance and with the right accents. Love this built in bookshelf that was painted fittingly to the same color as the wall. This is a great example of how the wall and unit seem to recede - almost disappearing - into the space. The colorful books just pop of the shelf. Add a few mirror accents or metallic pieces to really create visual interest here. Keep the accents bright + light and your small space will feel decadent and bigger than you knew!

Simply Enjoy Your Home!

Decorating and furnishing your small space can be a fun and creative adventure but don't forget to simply enjoy your space. Seems simple enough but too many times I hear friends rushing through their life from work to plan to meeting, etc. Take time in your small space to just relax - your house (no matter how small or big) is your place to just enjoy. One of my favorite things is to make time for is making breakfast. My specialty - spinach egg white omelettes! Oh la la!

USING YOUR WALLS:
Creating A Focal Point In Your Bedroom

If you are looking for way to create an impact in your small bedroom, consider creating dimension and texture to your wall by adding fabric. Loving this photo of fabric wrapped around a board and then hung up on the wall to fill the entire space. It's almost a double as - wall furnishing / headboard. You can easily recreate this in your space by wrapping fabric you love around a few boards that have been secured together.

Also, note how the bed is not centered on the wall but it still feels balance? The designer placed a lamp about the same height as the headboard to create harmony. Remember there really are no rules - it's what feels good to you that works best in your home.

SMALL SPACE DWELLER HANDBOOK:
Creating A Focal Point In A Small Space

The goal in a small space is to create a focal point, the one piece that anchors the space by creating balance and harmony.

Loving this example of how the sofa is not lined up square under the windows. The designer used the walls to create a framed art gallery that mirrors the dimensions of the window and, therefore, created harmony in the space. The couch feels good there and the space is cohesive and balance. Be creative in your space. I decided to place our couch smack in the middle of our family room but it works because I balanced the space on the ends with pieces that are similar in form.

There really are no "rules" for designing a space. What works for you in your home is what is best! LOVING. LIVING. SMALL. is about providing inspiration, ideas and tips for you and your small space and hopefully this page out of SMALL SPACE DWELLER HANDBOOK will stay with you!
