small space d.i.y.
round burlap inspiration board

Oh la la how pretty are these style spaces by talented Twig Hutchinson? Oh my! I am loving the rustic, style edges, the panel wood walls covering all sides and the curiosities adorning the desks. My favorite item in this space - the burlap board. How clever and an awesome and easy small space d.i.y. Pick up an embroidery hoop of your size choice, a cork board roll and some burlap. With a little glue you and some scissors, your own pretty inspiration burlap board is ready to be part of your small space decor. Pretty!

Speaking of texture, check in tomorrow for my new series DESIGN SPOTTING with a 5-day series of posts about desert city, Palm Springs.

a sneak peek at next week's city inspiration | palm springs

I had a little mini-trip this week to sunny and sweet Palm Springs and was so inspired by the color, texture and design finds that I am dedicating all of next week to posts about design ideas for the small space dweller inside of us. Until then, here's a sneak peek of some style through these photos I snapped of my favorite things, including my new rescue puppy sweetly posing by the pool. Have a great weekend!

just noticing everywhere :: everyday frosted accents

I'm an avid window shopper, often looking and gathering inspiration in different neighborhoods. Lately, I've been noticing frosted glass accents everywhere. I know it's definitely the holiday season (although hard to believe because it's warm here) but I feel that these pretty textural pieces will last way after the new year. and the best part - they are a small space d.i.y. waiting to happen. Pick up a can of frosted paint spray from your local craft or home supply store, an affordable flea market bauble or two and have fun!

I am so excited to be taking a mini-trip to Palm Springs this week and I'm looking forward to relaxing at the Ace Hotel - my first visit. Cocktails, sun, window shopping, reading by the pool and design inspiration are on my list. Have you stayed at the Ace Hotel? How cute are these rooms? I already love the style and decor and so want that wooden side table by the bed - fun!

lately inspired by...tin tiles

 I am hoping to use shiny + cool tin tiles in a small space diy. these guys would make a cool art display - maybe under a collection of glass bottles? or even bigger like a cool headboard? Or even an accent wall? Anything reflective works in a small space - love this!

By the way, loving the matte black tile in the upper right. Edgy, cool, style.

small space dweller handbook:
make it personal in your small space

Loving these personal items - style and vibe

Floor-to-ceiling bookcases are fab small space ideas!

Loving the beveled glass door - perfect!

 Brick wall. Check!

I am seriously a sucker for string lights - tres romantic

Pendant lights are perfect in all spaces.

Don't you just love small details in any space? I definitely do - there's something meaningful - not in a sappy way but in a thoughtful way - love that. I was recently enjoying lovely photographer, Bonnie Tsang's, blog (seriously, her work is amazing) and I came across a few venues that she has shot. I fell in love with the spaces at Marvimon & Smog Shoppe. Located in Los Angeles, these two event spaces are full of design style, texture and tons of personal touches. From the landscaping to the vintage signs to the oversized letters on the floor-to-ceiling bookcases to the string lights (my fave), these spaces are equally romantic as they are eclectic, cool and relaxed. No matter how big or small your space is, adding a bit of personal favorites will immediately add style to your space.

small space dweller
a white palette

A Nolita Flat

Welcome back to small space dwellers, my little series about real people's spaces and small space solutions right inside. When I saw this interior on my fave small space flickr  stream (if you don't check out this one - you should! A great collection of small space interiors), I thought it was a great space - fun, modern, comfortable with touches personal whimsy. I especially love the white palette that the owner used - a great small space decor idea. Let's check out how this white works for small homes.

1 :: WHITE PALETTE
Simple and stylish - all white palettes keep small spaces clean, cohesive and pretty. I absolutely love the look of all white rooms  and think it's a great opportunity to emphasize your style by using the white to guide the design.

2 :: POPS OF COLOR
The white palette is the perfect place to show moments of color, like the pink accents throughout the space. I love the artwork with touches of pink to tie in the room.

3 :: COLLECTIONS
Another small space idea is to group your decor in collections to provide a controlled design. In this space, the owner grouped a collection of artwork.

4 :: ACRYLIC
Incorporating a floating sense of design - furniture with legs or acrylic decor - allows the eye to  keep moving. I love the Ghost chairs around the table - a great way to breakup the boldness of the kitchen table.

5 :: FURNITURE WITH LEGS
I just mentioned this one - furniture with legs. It's such a great small space idea. The pink accent chairs showcase this look well. This style of furniture and decor does not break up the movement in the room and lets the eye continue to go around the room. And I also love how she placed the pink chairs on an angle, creating a conversation zone - another small space idea.

small space d.i.y.
create your own movie screen style

:: Images via Surf Hotel via Pinterest, Small Cool winner, an evening at Terroinis ::

I love curling up on my couch and watching movies or Netflix (just getting into Dexter and had a marathon viewing session this weekend - wowza). When a small screen won't do, consider creating your own movie screen, so to speak. I love the idea of using actual screens in your small space to project your fave flicks and in some cases, the screen can double as a room divider - very cool. Also consider turning your screen into a focal point, like the very chic Surf Hotel.

natural glam
a look back at 2010 home trends

:: Abby and I chatting 2010 home trends above ::

4. Jonathan Adler rug 5. Teak console table 6. Shell chandelier ::

It's hard to believe that we are getting to the end of the year. Time is moving fast, especially when I am already seeing Christmas decor in stores (what?!)

Earlier this year, my fellow Apartment Therapy colleague, Abby, and I spoke about home trends for 2010 and I wanted to check back in and see if their appeal was still alive and kicking. My favorite trend is natural glam, that mix of rustic, gilded chic with a smooth neutral palette that can make any size space feel elegant and sophisticated - even on a budget.  I spotted this pretty interior and love the look - completely inviting and comfortable. There are tons of small space ideas in here too and great product ideas that work in small spaces.

*I love the small space style of a symmetrical layout. This controlled style pulls a space together and provides a focal point.

*I also love going big in small spaces, like this incredible clock. Just because you have a limited amount of floor space doesn't mean you can go big on your walls - love this!

*And of course the good lighting will make a small space feel balanced and bigger.
    Have you tried this home trend?
